The Romans left many images of wooden rocking chairs so we all know they definitely existed thousands of years ago. However, the primary ones in England aren't until the first 18th Century. there have been probably earlier versions but their record has not survived. My grandparents had one then did all of my friends. i do not know why but rocking chairs were definitely the norm. I remember my Grandmother's, which was a solid wooden frame with a rocker, which sat on a base held together by springs. The seat and arms were upholstered. you do not see these much lately but some time past they were very fashionable . As children it had been an enormous treat if you bought to take a seat thereon and it had been often wont to reward good behavior.

These days there's probably more variety but less of them in use. Technology has provided alternative materials for design then you now get them made in plastic, metal and every one kinds of hybrids. you'll see the various sorts of rocking chairs here.
